The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah says the ruling New Patriotic Party was non-committal for a multi-stakeholder dialogue and deliberation on the scope of vigilantism because they want to protect their vigilante boys recruited into the National Security and other state institutions.

He claimed there were no substantial progress in the first round of the meeting, apart from the opening declaration on the menace as a result of the NPP’s evasive action on the matter on Tuesday.

“Our position on this matter has been for us to focus on political party vigilante and all its forms and manifestations, but they were insisting we limit the whole discussion to just internal party vigilantism, which we saw as a way of protecting their boys. Because they know that if we open up the discussion it’ll affect members of their vigilante groups recruited into the National Security.” he told Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Anopa kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM.

He indicated his side had their hopes and expectations dashed because the first round of meeting failed to agree on the scope of discussion.

The National Peace Council invited both parties for the meeting following the president’s call for them to meet and resolve the issue of political party vigilantism in the country.

The meeting took place at the Central Hotel, near the British High Commission in Accra.

The meeting was aimed at offering an opportunity for the two factions to table a number of proposals and modalities for disbanding vigilante groups.
