The minority leader in parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has pledged to support Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu in his fight to combat corruption in the country.

The pledge comes against the background of a recent plea by president Akufo-Addo during the State of the Nation Address for Ghanaians to support the special prosecutor fight against corruption.

“We can assure the president that on this matter (regarding the Special Prosecutor) he can count on our wholehearted support to make corruption a high-risk activity in the country”.

“This country given the character of Martin Amidu will benefit from what I call the “corruption saving dividends”. He added On November 17, 2017, Parliament passed the special prosecutor bill after a long debate in parliament.

The passage of the special prosecutor bill is to allow the government to allocate resources to the special prosecutor’s office and also appoint an independent prosecutor. The Bill will also give power to an independent prosecutor who will be tasked with the responsibility to prosecute past and present public officers alleged to have been corrupt.

After the passage of the Bill, President Akufo-Addo on February 23, 2018, Martin Amidu was sworn in as Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor after been approved by parliament after vetting.
