The much awaited maiden clean-up exercise by the Ministry of Inner-City and Zongo Development (MICZD) will come off this week end as planned at Nima in the Ayawaso East municipality in the Greater Accra Region.

The exercise is in line with the President’s pledge of keeping Ghana clean, and making Accra in particular the cleanest city in Africa.

In view of this, the Ministry of Inner-City and Zongo Development (MICZD) is embarking on clean-up exercises to rid Zongo communities in the city of the filth occasioned by the indiscriminate dumping of solid waste among others.

The clean-up exercise is scheduled to take place on Saturday April 28, 2018, starting from 6: 00 am at the Nima Police Station area all the way into the main Nima gutter area.

The Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (PPME) at the Ministry, Mohammed Alhassan in a statement issued ahead of the exercise said the maiden exercise has been planned to start in Nima and would focus on clearing all existing solid waste in the streets, street corners, drains, backyards, commercial precincts and public open spaces.

He urged all stakeholders including the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, religious leaders, transport unions, youth groups, civil society groups, educational institutions and the general public to participate in the exercise.

‘’After this maiden exercise, series of measures would be put in place to ensure sustainability, including enforcement of sanitation laws, providing incentives for solid waste sorting, developing sanitation entrepreneurs, providing additional refuse containers and increase frequency of collection,” he said.

According to the Director of PPME, these measures when properly implemented are expected to reduce littering, create jobs, keep the environment clean and improve the health and image of the Nima community.

The circular added that coordinators will be designated for each zone in the Nima area to provide guidance on how to go about the exercise.

The circular further stated that adequate provision has also been made for a number of trucks to evacuate all refuse that will be gathered by residents in the area.
