Togbe Asigbe, the Chief of Matse Dzorkpe/ Ando, has expressed worry over the deplorable nature of the Matse Dzorpke E.P Basic School. He expressed fears that the poor nature of the school, which is hampering teaching and learning, would affect the performance of the school children in their final Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Speaking with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a donation exercise executed for the community members by Clothe the Naked Outreach (CTN), a charity group, at the weekend, Togbe Asigbe said “the school lacks classrooms for Junior High School students.”
There is currently no electricity in the school and final year students, who happen to be the first batch of the school to sit for the BECE, could not study in the evening. A tour by the GNA on the school’s premises saw the unfenced and unreliable wooding structure, where the final year students study. The poor structure, which was provided by the community members four years ago, has few and unworthy furniture.
And prior to the intervention of Pencils of Promise, an educational charity organisation, the school had no proper classrooms for kindergarten, Togbe Asigbe said. He said the students always had to vacate the classrooms anytime it rained as the rusted roofing sheets was not enough to prevent the rains from affecting studies.
The school also lacks adequate toilet facilities and a reliable water supply and called on government and philanthropic organisations to come to the aid of the school. “We have been neglected by successive governments and this should not be the case. Our fate currently lies in the hands of the new government.”
