GSA is making efforts to rid the Ghanaian market of sub-standard electrical cables
The Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) has established that, electrical equipment like cables (wires) manufactured in the country are far better than those imported.
According to the authority, more than 70% of imported electric cables in the country are sub standard.
Dr lawyer Opoku Adusei, the Deputy Director General of Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) revealed this in an interview with Accra Fm on Monday observing that in addressing the issue of the risk and danger, consumers who resort to imported cables are likely to face this issue in the country most especially those in estate developing and individual who wish to build their own houses.
He consequently sent caution to consumers to be very vigilant when buying electrical equipment on the Ghanaian market as it has been inundated with fake goods proposing that, consumers can walk to any office of the authority for assistance in purchasing of these equipment.
“We have a testing unit which makes sure all imported goods are certified to see to it that, it’s of standard”. He hinted
“Through our investigation, we came to realize that, locally manufactured cables are of higher standard than those imported. This is because, the local industry understand the standard we need which helps manufacturers to be able to provide the best product”. He explained
However, Mr Opoku accepted the fact that, the GSA has not been able to protect Ghanaian consumers fully because the organization is not well equipped to undertake most tests. Adding that, in most cases, their officers at the various boarders of the country are not able to conduct the necessary tests because resources to do that are only available in Accra.
He also affirmed that, the Authority is going to work hand in hand with custom officers at the various boarders to decline any importer who refuses to comply with the authority’s regulations.
