It was an educative and thrilling experience for all three contesting schools in the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) University Challenge Monday as they took turns to answer tough questions from the quiz master to sail through the semi-finals and earn a spot in the final lap of the competition.
The Law Faculty of the University of Ghana Legon was charged up as contestants racked their brains to solve the riddles and tackle questions.
After hours of questioning, the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) managed to beat all other players to come first with 159 points.
Coming second, with only a point behind GIMPA was the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) who ended the last round with 158 points. The carriers of the day were the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) who came in third with 156 points.
Contestants from the three institutions; KNUST, UEW and GIMPA answered questions from the constitution, General Knowledge and Ghanaian history.
Jesse Haymann, one of the contestants from the winning team expressed excitement at the outcome of the quiz. For him, the finals is piece of cake for the team as they are more than prepared to take home the trophy
Fred Aning, from UEW, who won the admiration of the audience was equally confident of a win in Wednesday’s finals.
Although they did not win, a rep from KNUST, Ibrahim Bamba intimated that it was a great experience and hoped that they would come back next year as winners of the trophy.
Before the end of the competition, the finalists, UEW and GIMPA balloted for stances in the finals, a debate on the topic, “60 years beyond independence; foreign aid is needless to Ghana’s development.”
Meanwhile Chairman of the NCCE, Josephine Nkrumah charged the contestants to see the competition as a learning process and live by the tenets of the constitution. According to her, the main reason for the competition was to make the constitution alive to the youth.
She added that, the civic challenge which was launched by President Akufo-Addo on August 30, 2017 is aimed at making the youth more savvy to the constitution and more alive to them. It started with 16 schools from four zones and will see UEW and GIMPA compete for the maiden trophy in the finals on Wednesday.
The finals of the National Commission on Civic Education University Quiz comes off Wednesday, February 28, 2018.
The quiz is under the theme: “Restoring our Ghanaian values as active Citizens”.
