The Lower West Akim constituency of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched a vigilante group named ‘Asamankese NDC forces.

The fearful group is said to have magical powers that shield members from bullets and knife attacks.

The group were first spotted during the party’s Unity Walk at Somanya.

The formation of party vigilante groups is spreading fast across the country chiefly among the two leading parties, the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), despite concerns by the National Peace Council and other civil society groups about the existence of such groups.

Speaking to Kasapa FM’s Eastern Regional Correspondent Kojo Ansah at a press briefing to declare his intention to contest the Lower West Akyem Constituency organizer position, Aminu Issah alias Organizer general said the group is not to foment trouble like the invisible forces of the NPP but to provide a sense of security for the party and its supporters.

“…we also started organizing ourselves among our supporters not to go and fight but if something of that sort is coming they should be ever ready to protect themselves. Those young guys that you’re seeing, I’m telling you no amount of cutlass, gun can penetrate them. If you want to try, 2020 elections we’re going all out.”

According to him, most supporters of the party in the settler communities were intimidated by the NPP vigilante groups which prevented them from voting in the 2016 election. He said NDC members were driven away from voting centres during the polls. Therefore, the new group has been formed to provide security for such people to enable them take part in the 2020 election.
