The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organized its flagship program “Citizenship week” with over 10 thousand basic schools across the country.

According to the Deputy Chairman, Finance and Administration, Ms. Kathleen Addy, the Citizenship week is targeted at sensitizing young people in the basic schools about their rights, responsibilities and roles as citizens.

She said, during the week, the NCCE visits various basic schools across the country with prominent people to speak to the children about their rights and responsibilities as citizens as well as inspire them to take their education serious.

“During citizenship week we go into the classroom with citizens to educate the children and it also creates opportunity for the young people to meet prominent people in the society” she said.

Ms. Addy said, the citizenship week gives the NCCE an extra platform aside their daily duties of educating and interacting with market women, professional groups to interact with young people adding that this year’s celebration targeted 10 thousand basic schools across the country.

“We have our local officers across the country in 10 thousand basic schools interacting with students about their environment because this year’s celebration is themed “the environment and you” she said.

Ms. Kathleen Addy was speaking at the NCCE’s citizenship week held at the Manle-Dada and African Unity Schools in the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly on Wednesday, June 27
