Isaac Kwame Asiamah, Minister of Youth and Sports, has said renovation works at the Accra Sports Stadium, would not be rushed, though the venue has been earmarked for the hosting of the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations in November.

According to Mr. Asiamah, there must always be value for money and that is why they have plan “B” for the games, hence there was no need to rush in completing works at the Accra Sports Stadium, which may be turned out to be shoddy.

“The Accra Sports Stadium is not the only stadium in Ghana that can host the tournament, we have other stadia in Kumasi, Tamale, Cape Coast and Obuasi, which are equally good to host the games.

“We have written to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to send inspectors to Ghana to inspect the places I have mentioned and they have responded positively,” he added.

The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua Constituency, said in an interview with the GNA Sports that, “yes, we have to get value for money and each penny must benefit us, hence there should be no shoddy work.

“I have sent people to inspect the Kumasi and Tamale Sports Stadium and they look good, though we might need only a few things to put the place in good shape,” he added.

Mr Asiamah said, they are waiting for the CAF inspection team to have a look at the Kumasi, Tamale and Obuasi Stadia, which have equally good training pitches and hotels to accommodate teams and travelling fans.

The minister allayed fears that Ghana might not be able to host the upcoming Women’s African Cup of Nations (AWCON) as works at the Accra Sports stadium might not be completed on time.

Renovation work has begun on the playing pitch with re-grassing and some construction works at the VIP Stands,

Meanwhile, work is ongoing at the Cape Coast stadium and the other training pitches earmarked for the tournament as Ghana prepares to host the eight nations tournament.
