Hearts of Oak and Ghana Premier League legend Bernard Don Bortey has revisited memories of 2002 when his dream transfer to a Dubai-based club failed to go through.

The talented winger who scored all manner of goals at his peak reveals the failure was due to Hearts of Oak demanding an outrageous transfer fee that fended the club away.

“In 2002 I was in Dubai. Imagine at that time how highly rated I was. I had not even celebrated my 18th birthday but there was big clubs after me.” Don Bortey revealed to Kumasi-based Silver FM in an exclusive interview.

“The likes of George Weah were playing at that time and so to get that move was something great.”

“If Hearts of Oak had allowed me to go I would have been much richer today but I always give thanks to God for the talent he gave me. I never know what would have happened if I had been richer” the former Confederation Cup winner said.

Meanwhile, Don Bortey has not lost hope as he plans to go into coaching after retiring from the game.

“Maybe God has a bigger plan for me that I may become rich as a coach or as a big scout. You never know but I thank God always” a motivated Bortey added.

The former GHAPOHA prodigy is widely accepted as one of Ghana’s most talented players.
