The police have released the National Democratic Congress (NDC) chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo amidst wild jubilation from party supporters.

Ofosu-Ampofo spent over five hours at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters in Accra being interrogated over a leaked tape with security implications.

In a meeting with party communicators, the chairman of the social democratic party incited his men to “take the Electoral Commission chairperson to the cleaners” and to “insult the National Peace Council chairman.”

Charged supporters of the Umbrella family besieged the surroundings of the CID headquarters demanding the release of their chairman after hours of waiting on the street.

Moments after Ofosu-Ampofo was released around 17.45GMT, the agitating supporters went into a state of a jamboree.

Ofosu-Ampofo stepped out to calm the crowd and assured them “the police were professional” in handling him.

He said NDC will not subvert the peace of Ghana and thanked the party’s leadership for being behind him.

“This is the day the Lord has made and we should rejoice and be grateful to the good Lord. We should thank the leadership for keeping faith with us. Your NDC chairman is a man of peace,” Ofosu-Ampofo told the jubilant supporters.

He added: “I’ve been in politics for 20 years and there is no evidence that any insult has come out from my mouth. I’m a very peaceful person.

“We will not undermine the peace and stability of this country. We will continue to be a law-abiding party.”

Ofosu-Ampofo has formally been slapped with four charges over the leaked tape – threat of harm, conspiracy to commit harm, rioting and assaulting a public officer.
