Don’t over rely on government for job opportunities – UEW VC to graduates

Professor Rev. Father Afful Broni, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Education Winneba (UEW), has challenged the young graduates from the various tertiary institutions not to over-rely on government for job opportunities.

According to him, it’s long overdue for graduates to translate the training they have acquired from their institutions to rather partner government to create jobs for many young people in the job market.

Delivering a speech at the 24th Congregation of the institution, he encouraged them to be innovative in supporting the government to create jobs and urged them to always keep in touch with their colleagues, the faculty and above all the University, by joining the Alumni Association.

He expressed his confidence in their capacity to overcome prospective challenges out there, and urged them to contribute meaningfully to the development of the institutions they find themselves in.

Professor Obeng Mereku, Chairman of the governing council of the University entreated the young graduates to be patriotic and law-abiding citizens, having an unwavering respect for the rule of law.

He told the students not to join “the nation-wrecking approach to work” but rather serve mother Ghana faithfully at their workplaces, based on the training they have had from UEW.

He encouraged them to surge ahead and make a meaningful impact wherever they may find themselves.

According to him, the training they had acquired in UEW should make them stronger and more determined to achieve all their dreams.

Professor Obeng Mereku reminded the graduating students the need for them to acknowledge the fact that the education they had acquired from UEW demanded that they behave differently.

Mr. Simon Osei Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister, on his part revealed that the government and Ministry of Education are poised to merge the Kumasi and Mampong Campuses of UEW for them to become an autonomous institution to train Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teachers for various TVET Institutions in the country.

He told the students that the focus of university training is not only for the acquisition of knowledge, but the development of analytical and problem-solving skills, which will allow them to deal with the problems that they will encounter tomorrow.

He underscored that the end result of the training should be to acquire resilience that enables them to withstand the challenges in life.

The regional minister further told the students that the real value of their degrees and Certificates will manifest itself in how they apply the training they have received and practice honesty, commitment, resourcefulness, patriotism, respect for human dignity, patience and humility. These values, he observed, would eventually shape their attitude to life and empower them to become successful.
