Akufo-Addo's government was one of the best in Ghana’s history – Freddie Blay

A former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has shot down claims that the previous NPP administration was responsible for the country's challenges.

He instead offered a different perspective on the former government's performance, stating that the NPP's administration was one of the best in the nation's history.

He stated that despite the challenges faced during its eight-year tenure, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, along with former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, delivered a ‘solid performance’ in advancing the country's development.

“The government didn't cause the mess. The NPP under the circumstances for the eight years, I would say, go into history as one of the best governments that had ruled this country irrespective of what people’s opinion would be.

“But of course, everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but I am saying, closely that I’ve worked with that government as a party chairman and as a member of the cabinet, I don't think the performance can be described as bad. It was a solid performance on the part of the government, particularly the president of the republic and indeed the finance minister that you mentioned,” he said in an Oyerepa interview on June 14, 2025.

Blay further remarked that the legacy and achievements of the NPP government would ultimately be judged by posterity.

He added, “Of course, when you are keeping the past, sometimes people will have their own opinion about you for not opening your arms widely and stick it to some of the policies that may be controversial. But if you are convinced about it out of principle, you push it. People may disagree with you and sometimes condemn you but over time, the result of what you have achieved or what you did is very clear for the people of this country.”
