Businesses can’t pay taxes, social security over coronavirus – TUC Boss

Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah, has noted that some businesses in Ghana are unable to meet their statutory requirements which include the payment of social security of workers and payment of taxes,

.Dr Baah said during the virtual May Day celebration in the studious of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on Friday May 1 that businesses across the world in Ghana will take a long time to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak.

He said many businesses have collapsed or are on the verge of closure following the pandemic.

“COVID-19 has been with us for two months but the effect will take years to recover.

Companies have lost tons of raw materials due to border closures around the world. Also, casual and contract workers have been laid off, the few workers keeping their jobs have their income reduced drastically, he said.

“Companies struggling to pay workers, social security and taxes,” he said.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who was also in the studios of the GBC applauded workers for their contributions towards nation-building as Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate May Day today 1 May 2020.

“We recognize and appreciate the efforts and sacrifices they have made towards the construction of the happy and prosperous Ghana we seek, and, on this day, I say Ayekoo to each one of you,” Nana Akufo-Addo said in his May Day message to Ghanaian workers.

“We recognize and appreciate the efforts and sacrifices you have made towards the construction of the Ghana that we seek,” he said.
