Gabby shares details of 'frank' debate he had with a man on the economy, cedi depreciation

New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has shared details of a debate he had with a Ghanaian who confronted him over the depreciation of the country's currency, the Ghana cedi.

In a post shared on Facebook, on November 21, 2024, Gabby indicated that the man told him that the bad performance of the Ghana cedi shows that the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, can be trusted with Ghana’s economy and not that of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He said that even though he did not want to debate the “neatly dressed man,” he had to tell him that Dr. Bawumia is only the vice president and “has never been president before,” which he said infuriated the man further.

Gabby indicated that the man insisted that Bawumia has “been part of the mess” and can’t do any better if he is made president.

The NPP stalwart said he then went on to give the man a lesson about the economy and cedi depreciation, which put a smile on the man’s face.

He said he told the man that even though the cedi is depreciating, Ghana’s economic growth has been exceptional under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government compared to the previous NDC government.

He made the point that the economy has grown by over $76 billion since the NPP government took over in 2017, which means that more opportunities are being created for the country's youth.

“Yes, I know. That’s not good. The cedi is falling against the dollar, but the economy is growing even in dollar terms now, and not becoming smaller like before 2017. So, I ask you, would you trust the president under whom the economy shrunk or the one asking for your vote who was a big part of the team which, when the world faced its biggest economic crisis in some 90 years, were still able to grow the economy fairly significantly in dollar terms and even more in cedis,” Gabby said he told the man.
