Members of parliament (MP) are asking for better remuneration for effective discharge of their duties.

The MPs argue that the high standards the public is holding the institution to should come with better conditions of service.

Speaking on the floor of parliament on Tuesday, 5 December 2017, Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said lawmakers must be treated well if the demand for accountability is to see the light of day.

He said: “Mr Speaker, a parliament that is accountable is one that should also provide adequate salary to Members of Parliament to enable them to be able to concentrate on the business of parliament and yet every now and then citizens are at the throat of members of parliament talking about car loans.

“The other day at Bekwai, one person took us on rather violently that MPs only agree when it comes to taking consideration on car loans, how inappropriate. Mr Speaker, a parliament that is accountable is one that provides a register of outside interest and incomes”.

MPs are paid around GHS8,000 monthly while ministers receive GHS15,739. The President and Vice-President take home a monthly salary of GHS22,809 and GHS20,529, respectively.
