Isaac Asiamah, Minister-designate of Youth and Sports, has praised the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, for his remarkable achievements as far as the Black Stars is concerned.

According to him, although there is still more room for improvement as far as Ghana football is concerned, the GFA, under the presidency of Mr Nyantakyi, has been able to propel the senior national team, the Black Stars, on the international football stage to the extent that it has qualified for the last three FIFA World Cups.

His comments come at the time Mr Nyantakyi has suffered a lot of flak following the inability of the Black Stars to win the recently held Africa Cup of Nations and for the general decline in Ghana football.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of parliament on Tuesday, February 7, Mr Asiamah said: “My attitude is that a leader must lead. I am not in the position to be at banter with associations under me. We can be in disagreement and that will be okay. We can disagree on policy issues, but for me to be fighting publicly with an agency under me, I will not do that. If there is anything, they must be tabled for dialogue and negotiation; that is what I believe in.

“We all have our achievements and failures. The GFA as an institution, they have their achievements and failures and nobody can deny the fact that Kwesi Nyantakyi has done something good for Ghana football. For the first time under his leadership, we were able to qualify for the World Cup; that is a statement of fact.

“Three times under his leadership we have been to the World Cup, consistently. This is his achievement and legacy, [but] our domestic league is suffering.”
