Homosexuality: Let's wait for Akufo-Addo's response from UK - Koku Anyidoho

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress [NDC], Koku Anyidoho says Ghanaians should wait for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s reply to UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s supplication on homosexuality acceptance in Ghana before they react.

Koku, who said his former boss Late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills was courageous enough to snub similar request from former UK Prime Minster David Cameron, is however, doubtful the President's responses will be what Ghanaians look forward to.

“Late President Mills was bold enough to reject their advances because he is against gayness. I knew his [Mills] stance on gay issues. But now, I cannot think and speak for the current president,” he said.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May is reported to have told President Akufo-Addo and other African leaders attending the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in London that it is wrong for homosexuals to be persecuted for their sexual orientation.

She said her country is therefore ready to help African countries to reform their laws to accommodate the interest of homosexuals.

While acknowledging efforts being made by member countries to improve conditions of homosexuals, she noted: “Yet there remains much to do…Nobody should face discrimination and persecution because of who they are or who they love. The UK stands ready to support any Commonwealth nation wanting to reform outdated legislation that makes such discrimination possible.”

President Nana Addo is yet to respond to Theresa May’s request, but Koku Anyidoho, speaking in an interview on NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’ hopes the president will be “straight forward” to the citizenry.

“Let’s give the president the benefit of the doubt, when he returns home, I am hoping he will tell us something positive,” he told sit in host, Mc-Jerry Osei Agyemang.
