JJ Gonami, from Volta with pride
He has been operating in the Volta region for some time now but young artiste, JJ Gonami, wants to spread his tentacles to other parts of the country.
According to the native of Tegbi in Volta region, though the Ghanaian music scene is choked with many talents, he has got what it takes to gain the needed attention he is craving for. Speaking with Showbiz last week, JJ Gonami, who said he is promoting the “roots of Ewe culture” with his music said, “It’s not just about churning out songs but selling the Ghanaian culture through creativity. My style and even the rhythm I use are quite different and that is what makes me stand out”.
Taking his music inspiration from his grandmother, who he said he loved to listen to her sing when growing up, JJ Gonami says his talent is a “family treasure”.
“My grandmother was a great composer and whiles living with her as a child, I used to write most of her compositions when she sang in Ewe. That was how I developed my art of composing songs and she has always been a great motivation,” the hiphop artiste stated.
JJ Gonami, real name, Junior Gonami Agbenuvor, released his first album, The Ewe Dictionary in 2014 which had songs such as Megborna (I’m coming), I Dey Go, One Man Thousand, Roll On It, Kporxa, Dzidzor kporkpor (Happiness), Ghetto and Gomidzo featuring Edem.
Talking about his challenges as a young artiste, the Dzidzor kporkpor artiste said the industry lack the needed structures to groom talents. That, he noted, had contributed to the inability of new talents to rise from the underground.
“I’m very popular in the Volta region and I have a huge following but interestingly, when organisers call me for shows, they don’t even pay me. This is really unfortunate but that is the reality we are facing now and that is my biggest challenge,” he noted.
Currently under the management of Mr .E. Group of companies, JJ Gonami is set to release his second album titled, Unbreakable, which has songs such as Unbreakable, Madly In Love and Money.
He is promoting his latest song, Ayefro, ft. Kisa
