The much-awaited Coca Cola New Year fireworks at the Labadi beach came off on Sunday but without the fireworks as promised. Apparently due to some ‘transition’ related problems, the pyrotechnical spectacle could not take place and it had to be scheduled for an undisclosed date. Instead, dozens of balloons were floated into the air to signal the beginning of another year.
However, the artistes on the bill did not disappoint as one after the other, they performed their hit songs one after the other. As usual, the gospel acts were first on the bill to provide thanksgiving to the Almighty; and to warm the crowd up for the show. Gospel favourites Kweku Gyasi and Ohemaa Mercy were able to do just that. They got the crowd of young men and women drawn from all walks of life up and kicking. Occasionally, there were a few guys who misbehaved badly under the influence of alcohol but nothing untoward happened.
Ghana’s fastest rapper, Sarkodie as usual gave the crowd something to talk about as he dropped his witty wrap-up on the 2008 general elections. Since the public was hearing the track for the first time, they listened attentively as he showcased his lyrical prowess and gift for words. Okyeame Kwame, the Bradez and Tinny were all in the house to give the crowd a rousing experience for the New Year; something many Ghanaians were denied earlier this year due you winding general elections.
