V.I.P For Kora Awards? But Kwadee Unhappy

He went home empty handed at the just ended Ghana Music Awards but Okomfo Kwadee can rest assured that his music has a great impact on a lot of people and that he has many followers than he probably might know.

At the fifth edition of the Ghana Music Awards held last Saturday, hiplife trio VIP and Daughters of Glorious Jesus won five awards apiece but VIP by virtue of the fact that they won the Artiste of the Year will represent Ghana at the KORA awards to be held in South Africa later this year.

However many people were of the opinion that Kwadee should at least have won an award.

Shouts of Kwadee! Okomfo Kwadee! Came from every angle of the Accra International Conference Centre where the event took place, an indication that a good number of people had come for the show with very high hopes for this artiste who boasts of unique style and lyrical prowess.

Having deservedly warmed himself into the hearts of the young and old, Kwadee?s Metoaso album which had hits songs like Meyere ne Mpena, Ahwedee Abena and Boys Boys found itself in six categories: Album of the Year, Hiplife Album of the Year, Song of the Year,  Hiplife Song of the Year, Artiste of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.

Obviously Kwadee had thrilled and almost dazed people with this album and the year in review had been a good one for the young artiste, his songs enjoyed massive airplay and the year also saw him at his best on the huge success and Kwadee gave a very good account himself wherever he performed.

As things turned out however, the awards did not prove to be a true reflection of the good works of this talented artiste.

When Showbiz contacted Kwadee, the first thing this reporter wanted to know was whether he was disappointed, ?Not exactly, I just have a feeling that the organisers are out to exploit artistes,? were his words.

What does Kwadee mean by this? ?They just use our names to get our fans to attend the show, that?s it,? were the word of Kwadee who believes that Charter House, the organisers tend to favour artistes who are close to them and dance to the tune of their music.

For people like him who are not close to the organisers, Kwadee thinks that their names just end up on the nominations to attract people to the show, ?I think in future the organisers should seek permission from us before using our works,? he warned.

Then the bombshell came ?Personally I don?t want to be nominated again, they should just let me be, I am a survivor!?

Kwadee added that most of his colleagues are really pissed-off with the organisers because they think that the unfair nature of the awards can easily discourage new artistes and even bring rivalry in their ranks (the artistes).

Asked if he was discouraged by the turn out of events, Kwadee said ?not in the least, though it is now giving me divided attention, I am busy in the studio but have had to spend lots of time on the phone and see people all about the awards.?

For Kwadee, who is currently working on his third album which he hopes to release for Easter, ?when your work is appreciated, people will patronise it and always invite you for shows, remember when I launched my second album? Attendance was great and the show itself was successful, that was my award.?

Kwadee said people did not understand him initially when he came to the scene, ?now it is really getting to them, infact I believe it has really got to them.?

Showbiz asked Kwadee what he thought was unfair about the awards since it is based on Public and Selection Committee voting? ?I don?t think it counts, how could people have voted for an artiste and shout the name of another at the awards??

Kwadee congratulated VIP for their awards saying they did a good job. He had a word of caution for them, ?Don?t be flattered or allow it to get into your heads, otherwise you might not work hard and can easily fall.?

To all his fans, Kwadee says ?Keep supporting us and pray for us because we are still working very hard and won?t let you down!?

For Mrs. Theresa Ayoade, General Manager of Charter House the event organiser, Kwadee or anyone who thinks that they as organisers gave the awards to their favourites has no case, ?anyone who talks like that is certainly exhibiting gross ignorance, one does not need to be a friend of Charter House to be nominated or win, these accusations are baseless.?

Mrs. Ayoade maintained that the same formula of Public and Selection Committee voting has been used over the years and she wonders why people seem to have a problem with this year?s awards, ?In every category, there are strong contenders and weak contenders,? she said.

As the event organisers, Mrs. Ayoade added that the success of the event, a sense of achievement and that is the reason why we try new ideas everytime, who wins an award and who does not is not really our business and that is why KPMG is charged with collation of the results.

She added however that her outfit always welcomes criticisms, ?if there are loopholes in the process, let?s address it can work in everyone?s interest instead of being emotional about it.?

Mrs. Ayoade said some of her colleagues and herself were surprised when Daughters of Glorious Jesus won the Album of the Year because they did not think it would go to them.

Her impression about the suggestion of seeking permission from artistes before nominating them: ?We have taken note of that and will cast our net wider in future by involving many more people in the industry? musicians will be asked to submit their works for the period in contention, whichever process we adopt will be agreed on as has been the case for past events.

Mrs.  Ayoade is of the view that Kwadee?s  decision  is a result of lack of knowledge of the process but said Charterhouse  will reach out to him if he is nominated in future but if he insists on opting out , it will be unfortunate but there is very little they can do, adding that his stand is very childish.

Finally Mrs. Ayoade said ?the Ghana Music Awards is growing and now has International appeal, it is the biggest event on the West Coast of Africa, let?s stop being stop being emotional and moving at a very fast pace and we need to move along?.
