Ghana’s fashion industry is fast growing and becoming one of the most viable sectors of the economy.
Talented designers and makeup artistes continue to emerge catering for the growing needs, tastes and style of Ghanaians and other nationals.
Street Fashion Train foundation having noticed these incredible contributions by fashion industry players came up with an award scheme dubbed “Ghana Fashion Industry Honours/Awards (GFIHA) in March 2018 to honour seasoned industry players and celebrate them as part of the Wear Ghana Month Celebrations.
Street Fashion Train Foundation and Ministry of Trade collaborated and organized the second edition of the event at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra on 31st March 2019.
Speaking at the second edition of the Ghana Fashion Industry Honours /Awards(GFIHA), the C.E.O of the Street Fashion Train Foundation and the Wear Ghana Month Program, Mr. Benjamin Mills a.k.a Mr. Wear Ghana mentioned that the purpose of this event is to celebrate fashion industry players in Ghana who have contributed immensely to the growth of the fashion industry.
“Today, we will honour fashion industry players whose profile continue to expand based on their unique creative approach that progressively highlights Ghana’s clothe culture.
We will also honour patriotic Ghana’s who wear Ghanaian fabrics and use locally produced fashion products he said”.
The representative from the Ministry of Trade, Madam Harriet Asiedu expressed joy for the collaboration and commended Street Fashion Train for the initiative.
She asked industry players to take advantage of the Wear Ghana program and create wealth for themselves as well as use locally produced fabrics in order to revamp the textile industry in Ghana.
“If the wear Ghana Month campaign succeed more employment opportunities will be created in the fashion industry and that will impact on Ghana’s economy.” She said.
Professor Emmanuel Asiamah C.E.O of Hedges Pensions who was chairman for the event, in his address advised that fashion industry players should be honest when dealing with their clients and deliver on time just like their fellow industry players on the globe; in order to catch up with them and bring more business to Ghana.
He also advised them to work on their pension since that will cushion them when they retire from active service.
The awards night saw great personalities like Actor, David Dontoh, Musician Gyadu Blay Ambolley, some Members of Parliament, like Hon. Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Senior Staff in Parliament and the Ministries Departments, and Agencies who received citations for wearing Ghana on every stage of the globe, as well as Chiefs and queen mothers from Ga -South, graced the occasion.
Seasoned designers like Oheneba Yaw Boamah with the brand name Abrantie the Gentleman, Emma Owusu -Asiamah, a make-up artist and a teacher at 2nd image international Ghana, Selina Bebaako -Mensah of Selina’s Bebs fame were honoured.
Artistically inspired designers from Ghana National Dress Makers Association, Cooperative Fashion Designers Association, Ghana National Association of Garment Makers, Makeup artists and Coiffures, and models were honoured.
These group of industry players have contributed immensely towards the fashion industry in Ghana.
Their experience as fashion industry players spans over ten to forty years. They have also trained over one thousand young people in the fashion industry.
During the Awards category, MBA Mode Institute received the trophy as winners of the maiden edition of the Wear Ghana Inter Fashion Schools Competition, Blue Crest School of Fashion and Design placed second during the competition. Marshall University College took the third position during the competition.
In all, twenty- two categories were rewarded for creativity and hard work. On the red carpet were elegant designs made with African prints.
