AMERI Saga: Keep quiet! You caused the mess – Energy expert to NDC minority

An Energy Expert, Kojo Opoku has asked the minority caucus in parliament and members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), to keep mute over issues regarding the renegotiated AMERI deal and subsequent sacking of the Energy minister, Boakye Agyarko.

He said its’s shameful for the minority to speak on the issue alleging they brought the “bad deal” unto the nation.

“The minority are responsible for the bad deal we have now, they have no right to even try to talk about this, if they had not brought this deal, we wouldn’t be here now,” he said.

A Member of the Mines and Energy committee of Parliament and NDC Member of Parliament for Bongo, Edward Bawa says all major decision makers in the chain that passed the renegotiated amendment of the AMERI deal are liable for sanctions.

He’s charged government to launch comprehensive investigation into the failed Novation agreement.

In a reaction on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, Bawa intimated even at the Presidency those agents responsible for the executive approval are complicit in the deal and must be held responsible as well.

“…You see we’re looking at the point at which anybody takes a decision. We’re not looking at what the consultations are. At the Ministry level, a decision was taken- who took that decision? It was the Minister. At the FlagStaff level, who took the decision? It was the President and made the Executive Secretary to sign that letter. So we are looking at the points of decision. The third decision would have been at parliament, where we would have taken a decision but we kicked against it, that’s why we are having this conversation today. So we are looking at the decision points; …. the moment you have the responsibility to take that decision you become liable if there’s anything wrong with it.”

The novation and amendment agreement was seeking to buy out the deal AMERI Energy had with the government of Ghana under President John Mahama and handed over to a third party Mytilineos for 15 years. Ghana would have ended up paying over Ghc1 billion under the new arrangement.

The joint committee on Finance and Energy of Parliament rejected the new deal because it had no signatures from the Attorney General and Finance minister.



The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, relieved the Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko from office. This comes after the President was allegedly misled into approving the new AMERI deal which had been by Executive Order.
