The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has blamed residents in Ghana’s national capital, Accra, for the perennial flooding, the latest of which killed five people after heavy rains on Sunday night (7 April 2019).

Some parts of the city, including the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Kaneshie, Avenor, Alajo, among others, were submerged leading to the death of the five in different areas.

According to NADMO, some residents have turned some major drains in the capital into dump sites, thus, clogging the drains, which eventually leads to floods whenever it rains.

Speaking to Benjamin Akakpo on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Monday, 8 April 2019, the NADMO Director of Floods, Mr Evans Anakwa cautioned the residents to desist from throwing rubbish into open drains.

He said: “I think we are also a factor because the drains that we have even dredged [are] full today. You dredge today, tomorrow it is full. Drains are now refuse centres, which is not good.”
