South Africa Football Association President Danny Jordaan has charged African countries to conduct an audit into their collective failure to use Ghana’s top-class performance in the 2010 FIFA World Cup to improve in the tournament.

Jordaan, who is a Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Vice-President, has been reviewing the performance of Africa in hosting the FIFA World for the first time 10 years after the first ball kicked in the tournament.

Ghana became Africa’s sole torch-bearers of the tournament after advancing to the quarter-finals following a supreme performance against the United States of America.

The South Africa FA boss played the role of CEO of the local organising committee and watched the Black Stars sailed through to the quarter-finals before Uruguay controversially eliminated the West African powerhouse.

Jordaan, who is now also a Confederation of African Football vice-president, said if there was any regret it was that the tournament had not provided the springboard that African football had hoped for.

“In 2014, Algeria and Nigeria made it to the second round but in Russia in 2018 all five African teams dropped out in the first round,” he said. “We have to look at why we have slipped back since Ghana got to the quarter-final.

“The hope that we had that 2010 would signal the renaissance of African football in major competitions like the World Cup did not materialise.”
