Close to 90,000 voters in Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency will head to the polls today, January 31, 2019, to elect a new Member of Parliament.

Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, who has been their representative since 2012, passed on in November last year, necessitating the by-election.

He was buried last Saturday.

Representing his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for Thursday’s elections is one of his widows, Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

She has to safeguard a seat that has consistently been won by the NPP.

But she will have to contest a strong opposition in Delali Kwasi Brempong, who has been a consistent challenger to the seat.

Another consistent challenger, William Kofi Dowokpor, will seek to break the duopoly in the constituency, having been unsuccessful despite moving from the Convention People’s Party (CPP) to the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

Clement Boadi will also represent the Liberal Party of Ghana.

Before the polls, the NDC had raised concerns about the voters’ register, claiming it is bloated.

The opposition party threatened to boycott the exercise if proper arrangements are not made by the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC).

But the EC has since described as “unfounded” and “baseless” the accusations by the NDC.

A total of 88, 745 voters are expected to cast their ballots in the election.
