Some 90 embattled customers of Menzgold who besieged the private residence of Nana Appiah Mensah known as NAM1, on January 8, are expected to report to the Accra Regional Police Command on Friday, January 10 to be processed for court.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, they are being charged for conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful entry as well as displaying offensive conduct.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb on January 9, DSP Effia Tenge said the police are conducting further investigations into the customers who were earlier granted bail in the late hours of Wednesday after they were arrested at Trasacco Valley in Accra.
“All customers that besieged the residence of NAM1 were granted bail through the Chairman of the Group and its Vice Chairman. All those who were arrested were properly cautioned, statements were taken from them and as at this morning, the police are continuing investigations to prepare individual dockets and cases against them and to also process them for court. All 90 customers are expected to report tomorrow, January 10 to be processed and given an appropriate court date,” she explained.
DSP Effia Tenge said the group had unlawfully besieged a private residence and organised an illegal demonstration, an action, she indicated had flouted the Public Order Act 491 (1994).
“We live in a democratic country and whoever wants to embark on such a public event, should notify the police with details pertaining to where and how they are going to embark on such an exercise but if this is not adhered to, it amounts to violation of the same Act,” she added.
On Wednesday, January 8, over 300 aggrieved Menzgold who were from Tarkwa, Kumasi and Accra earlier converged at Shiashie junction Wednesday morning to join two VIP buses and a minibus, making their way into the private residence of Nana Appiah Mensah, CEO of the embattled gold dealership, to demand their locked-up cash.
The customers on arrival tried to force their way into the compound resulting in warning shots being fired from the house.
