There are no CCTVs in the offices of MPs in Ghana’s Parliament, Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr has revealed.
He revealed the security lapse on Multi TV’s Newsfile programme on Saturday, 1 April during a discussion on the Ghartey Report on the bribery allegation made against the leadership of the Appointments Committee by Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga in connection with the vetting of Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko.
The Committee Report said there was no evidence to back Mr Ayariga’s claim that Mr Agyarko attempted bribing the Minority MPs on the Appointments Committee with GHS3,000 each through Minority Chief Whip Muntaka Mubarak and First Deputy Speaker Joe Osei-Owusu.
Even though the Committee said it found nothing to support Mr Ayariga’s allegation, there have been clamours from some quarters for a supposed CCTV footage that captured the bribery to be aired to the public to bring clarity on the matter.
Contributing to the discussion, Mr Baako Jnr told Newfile host Samson Lardi Anyenini that: “I’m going to say something very reluctantly; I know I ought not to say it based on my own limited amateur intelligence background. In the room, there is no CCTV. I ought not to be saying it because it is of security implications that somebody can go into the room and hurt [somebody] now knowing there is no CCTV.”
