President Nana Addo Dunkwa Akufo Addo has tasked the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), to chart a path of reconciliation and act within the confines of the law.

President Akufo Addo made the call at a ceremony held to induct Professor Anthony Afful-Broni as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the University.

Making reference to circumstances leading to his appointment as the Vice Chancellor, the President indicated that the ceremony was taking place on the heels of recent disturbing happenings at the University.

“It is worth noting, however, that the stakeholders have acted within the confines of the law to ensure that this University had a substantive leadership in place to help it achieve the goals for which it was established”

“To all whose diverse efforts helped in restoring normalcy to UEW, you have the appreciation of a grateful nation” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo said the induction ceremony indicated Government’s commitment to the growth of the University adding that “we will help ensure that UEW fulfils its mandate”.

President Akufo-Addo congratulated the new Vice Chancellor and said his wealth of experience, with decades of service to Church and classroom, made him an appropriate person for the all-important assignment.

“His induction into office today is a mark of the trust that the Governing Council and Faculty of the University have reposed in him, and I am confident that this trust will not be broken” he added.

The President asked the University to prepare for the immediate challenge that would confront them which was the dramatic increase in student population who would be seeking admission in the next two years, as a result of the Free Senior High School Policy.

President Akufo Addo pledged that his Government would do anything possible to make the teaching profession a preferred career choice for Ghanaians.

According to him, teaching was a dignifying profession that must not be viewed as a stop cup measure or a last resort job but as a viable choice to enter a well-paid and well-resourced profession.

The President said "our goal is to restore the teaching profession to the status we once cherished and to make it an attractive career choice”.

President Akufo Addo mentioned that the introduction of teachers’ license was in furtherance of the Government’s vision of creating a higher standard that would enhance professionalism in the teaching profession.

He however assured that the examination was not a deliberate attempt to put impediment in the way of teachers from the Colleges of Education and other tertiary institution but to raise the standard.

For his part, Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, the new Vice Chancellor of UEW expressed gratitude to the Governing Council for the confidence reposed in him and said it was the highest level of opportunity to serve the University and the country.

He promised to pursue the vision of the university and be sincere, transparent and prudent in all his dealings and ensure that all bottlenecks were removed for smooth operations.

He promised to focus on innovation to enhance the delivery of teaching and research to secure wider impact on the society.

He appealed to the University community to lend him their full support.
