The Speaker of Parliament, Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye, has cautioned the Minority in Parliament to resort to appropriate procedures to raise their concerns on issues directed to him.

His statement comes on the back of a memo by the Minority in the House and signed by its Leader on the State of the Emergency Bill 2020 as well as suggestions on how Coronavirus should be handled through a joint national effort.

According to the Speaker of Parliament, he had not received the memo as at Tuesday morning, March 24. He said that the letter was only received later in the afternoon after it had been circulated in the media.

“The Hon Minority Leader knows the appropriate procedures for handling all matters in Parliament and it would have been most appropriate if these in house channels had been explored rather than circulating the information in the media, especially since it is an internal memo.”

On the back of this, the Speaker said he expected that the Minority Leader would have approached and conferred with him for the necessary action.

Emphasizing that the interest of the citizens and the nation remains paramount, Prof Oquaye maintained that the issues contained in the memo are issues that have to be dealt with “using due process.”

He thus invited the cooperation of all “well-meaning and patriotic MPs and Ghanaians to cooperate and not be inhibitive in any way against national interest.”
