Following an intervention by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has provided James Town, a farming community in the Birim North District with 156 electricity poles to prevent unauthorized connections.

The provision which is under the Pole Extension Project would ensure that consumers in the farming community get their own meters.

PURC in one of its outreach education and monitoring programmes observed that some communities in the Birim North District were using substandard poles and unauthorized interconnections.

Mr Jude Aduamoah Addo, the Regional Director of the PURC, said in some instances about 15 houses had been connected to one meter and they string cable lines over long distances.

He thanked the ECG for the swift response to their request and expressed the hope that other communities identified with similar problems would be provided with poles.

He said the effort is to ensure that the needs of consumers are met and more importantly, increase revenue collection of the ECG in the area.

Mr Simon Amezugbeh, the Birim North District Manager of the ECG, said other communities like Yensiso, the old Abirem Township and Ekoasi among others, would soon benefit from the Pole Extension Project soon.
