A Deputy National Organiser of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Binney has said the party will sue the National Identification Authority (NIA) for registering some Ghanaians on Sundays.

According to Mr. Biney, the NIA is not permitted to register Ghanaians on Sundays unless explicit permission has been granted by the Board.

As far as the NDC is concerned, however, the NIA Board has not given any such permit.

He explained to Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Thursday, 23 May 2019 that: “We are aware that the NIA is registering some people on Sundays but that is wrong, they are not allowed to do that per the regulations,” he said.

“Unless, probably, the Board of the NIA has given permission to the effect that they should register people on Sundays, but as far as we are concerned, no such permission has been granted.

“We will go to court and ask the court to annul all those who registered on Sunday because it is illegal. If they claim they had the permission to do so, we will ask the court to compel them to produce the permit.”

Meanwhile, the NIA has denied claims that it has run out registration forms.

The Authority said it had printed enough national ID card application forms or oath of identity forms to serve all Ghanaians, home and abroad, and, therefore, the claims by some registration officials of a shortage of forms are “untrue.”
