The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has said Ghanaians are not taking its anti-child trafficking and irregular migration campaign seriously.
Speaking Tuesday January 30 at a forum aimed at strengthening advocacy against trafficking of young girls in Accra, the acting Executive Secretary at the Human Trafficking Secretariat of the Ministry, Victory Natsu decried as unfortunate the disinterest being shown to the campaign.
The ministry launched a massive campaign against child trafficking and irregular migration last year when a CNN documentary revealed, how Migrants in Libya were being sold into servitude.
The horrible images showed some migrants being sold for $400 while others are tortured to death by individuals in Libyan military wears.
About 127 Ghanaian migrants returned from the civil war-afflicted North African country following the report.
“When we treated Human Trafficking at…it was because most of them have no idea. So, I took the pain to go through the issues carefully for them to understand,” said Natsu.
Citing a United Nations estimates, she said 2.5million people are trapped in modern day slavery at any given time.
“And we have just had an example of that modern day slavery [in Libya] and the difference is that this time, we ourselves put ourselves into slavery,” she said.
