Government has reassured staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that their job will be secured under the concession arrangement.
ECG is to be leased to a concessionaire to manage, operate and invest in it, for a period of 20 years under the Ghana Power Compact spearheaded by Millennium Development Authority (MiDA).This has brought a lot of anxiety and agitations among staff of ECG as they fear of suffering voluntary lay off when the concessionaire finally takes over.
But speaking to Oman News on the sidelines of the inauguration of the newly constituted ECG Board, Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, stated that staff of ECG are guaranteed of job security under the concession arrangement.
“There wouldn’t be involuntary layoffs under the 20 years’ period, except you engage in a wrongdoing that you will suffer the consequences,” he said.
He explained that initial arrangement was that the ECG staff who would move to the new entity would have their jobs secured for a period of five years, but “this administration thought it would heighten anxiety and so we decided that for 20 years, nobody should be sacked involuntarily.”
“This is what we have done so if I were an ECG worker, I wouldn’t be boarded at all but rather focus on working,” he said.
