Government is likely to oversee the management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre with the University having a representation on the board when it finally becomes operational.

The dust will settle on the tussle over the facility today when the Information and Health Ministries later today address a joint Press conference on plans to operationalized the facility.

There are reports that government has totally taken over management of the facility, even before the opening of the hospital.

Meanwhile, today’s Presser is expected to highlight details on how the UG Medical Centre will be operationalized after take of.

Two years after the $217 million University of Ghana Medical Centre was commissioned by former President John Mahama, the facility remains shut.

Management of the facility has long been a serious bone of contention between the University of Ghana and current Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, a reason why the facility remains shut.

In the wake of the country’s ‘No bed syndrome’ pressure has been mounting on government to open the facility to salvage the worsening health system.

Sources close to the Ministry say the facility will be open to the public on July 18, 2018, to provide specialized medical care such as ENT, Dermatology, and Ophthalmology among others.

The multi-million dollar facility, which is an extension of tertiary care in reference to advanced levels of medicine, can rival any world-class hospital.

It has about eight huge blocks, which house an emergency centre, an outpatient and administration block, women and children’s centre, a medical training and simulation centre, among others.
