Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has revealed that she has also been affected by the sanctions meted out to some radio stations by the National Communications Authority (NCA) for noncompliance.

The Minister, who signed for the sanctions to take effect, said on Accra-based Starr FM on Wednesday, October 4 that: “I am also affected in this. I was one of the Founding Directors of Atlantis Radio. I signed the papers to incorporate that station many years ago, I was a young lawyer at the time.

“My good friend, James Appiah, may his soul rest in peace… This was his passion, unfortunately, I didn’t even know they were included in the list until I saw the final report and I am like, it is unfortunate. I would have done something to preserve his legacy, but he owes in excess of GHC 60 million. He never paid and so they have no business being in business then.

“I happily signed off for the sanctions to be applied against them. If I can do that against my own station, my beloved station, why anybody should think I will treat their station differently. I say let the chips fall where they may.”

The NCA is owed GHC 1,223,790,000 by some 76 commercial and community radio stations across the country. To this end, the NCA has revoked the license of some stations while others have been fined.
