The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah has told Finder Sports that the decision to acquire a permanent residence for the head coach of the Black Stars was long overdue, and is a move that will save the country millions of cedis.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 2017 CAF Awards unveiling ceremony, Asiamah said he could not understand why the country was spending some much on hotel bills for Black Star coaches when buying one was a more prudent measure.
“We have a national team which means that whatever the case we will have a national team coach, so why don’t you think ahead and make sure we have a permanent residence for the coach so we can make some savings.
There are other competing areas, and sports need a lot of funding so why do we spend so much on one person (the coach), I felt that was unnecessary. These decisions they are not taken by the GFA, it is government that is paying so
I sat down as a minister and took this decision to save the country from this huge expenditure that we were incurring.”
Earlier this month it came to light that he Ministry of Youth and Sports was coughing up $8000 every month to cater for accommodation for Black Stars coaches.
The Sports Ministry last month acquired a permanent residence earmarked to house national team coaches in a move that was necessitated by the high cost of rent and hotel bills accrued as a result of accommodating the national team coach.
Speaking at the Forum for the establishment of the National Sports Fund, Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, disclosed that the move was necessary because the Ministry could no longer afford to spend such an amount on accommodating a Black Stars coach.
“We have just acquired a house to accommodate the black Stars coach. Can you believe that we used to spend $8000 every month on accommodation for the Black Stars coach?
“Now with this house, we can save that money for other things,” he said.
Appiah is yet to move into the residence but has gone to inspect it and says he is satisfied with it.
