Lifting of lockdown doesn't mean the virus has disappeared - Justice Yankson warns Ghanaians

The General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Justice Yankson has cautioned Ghanaians that the coronavirus has not ‘disappeared’ because the lockdown has been lifted.

He made the statement in reaction to a video circulating on social media which shows a gathering of people jubilating after the president restriction of movements in parts of the country during his address to the nation on Sunday, April 19, 2020.

“The time the president lifted the lockdown, people were jubilating, gathering in large numbers and having fun. Some people in the nation are too stubborn even though it has been constantly said that it’s not a virus to joke with … The virus is still in the country, and there is the community spread,” he said.

He further pleaded with people who are still taking the impact of the coronavirus lightly to have a change of mind and to get more information on international news portals.

“Anyone in the country who thinks the virus doesn’t exist or we are free of the virus should have a change of mindset, I beg the person to change his/her mind. They should take their time to watch BBC and CNN to see how severe the virus is,” he added.

He concluded that everyone in the country should continue to adhere to the precautionary measures set by the World Health Organization and the government to control the spread of the virus.

“As it stands now we have over 1,000 cases, so no one should think we are free. So we should take care of ourselves, and be mindful of our activities. No one should joke around,” he stated.
