Speaker of Parliament, Mike Oquaye
The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Michael Aaron Ocquaye has said Members of Parliament are not making money in Parliament contrary to the perception of some members of the public that they are rich.
The Speaker made the comment in Parliament today after the House had paid tribute to the late Dr Kwabena Adjei former Majority Leader in Parliament and former MP for Biakoye who was also former National Chairman of the NDC.
Prof. Michael Aaron Oquaye observed with much concern that there are many former members of Parliament who are not doing well financially and described the issue as worrying.
“People don’t have money here and people are not about money here. See the other members of Parliament who have left recently . . . we must look at the reality and make provisions for pensions and other aspects of the welfare of honourable members,” he said.
In order to ensure that Members of Parliament do not find themselves in such financial hardship after their tenure in Parliament, Prof Michael Aaron Oquaye said Parliament is in discussion with the State Insurance Company (SIC) to come out with a policy to help cushion MPs financially after their tenure in Parliament.
Dr Adjei who was also the former National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) died on March 12.
He Will be laid to rest this Saturday, 31st May, 2019 in his home town in the Volta region
He was 76-years-old.
