Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Afia Tenge has said her outfit is taking steps to ensure they settle trade disputes between Ghana, Nigeria and other foreign nationals in Ghana.

On 19 June 2019, Two Nigerian-owned shops at Suame in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, were ransacked by raucous Ghanaian youths.

The vandalisation of the shops was to register their displeasure against a decision by the Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA) to reopen closed Nigerian retail shops. This led to a near-clash between the Nigerians and the Ghanaians.

But DSP Afia Tenge says the Ghana Police Service is taking several steps to ensure peace between Ghana, Nigeria and other foreign nationals in Ghana.

“Ghana Police Service is putting measures in place to ensure there is peace between the two traders, however, is our duty to protect every citizen of the country and other foreign nationals who are living in the country,” he exclusively told Kwame Tutu on Anopa Nkomo on Accra based Kingdom FM 107.7

We urge all the citizens (traders) living in the country to be calm and respect the laws of the land,’ he added.

The confusion transpired ahead of a meeting by GUTA and other stakeholders on Wednesday to deliberate on the fate of Nigerian retailers at Suame and Tafo.
