Mr Emmanuel Nii Ankrah, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has attributed the high rate of accidents to non-compliance of basic driving regulations by drivers.

He said there was the need for continuous education to drivers to be extra careful on the road and they should also reduce their speed, observe road traffic regulations and take mandatory rest to avert the carnage on the road, especially during the period of festivities.

Mr Ankrah made the remark in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday and said until drivers realized that flouting basic rules in driving and all other offences, the problems would still persist on the road, hence the need for continuous sensitisations by road users on safety measures.

He said drivers should avoid over speeding and drunk driving to ensure accident-free Christmas and the New Year festivities, adding that “they should take into consideration the safety of passengers and pedestrians.”

Mr Ankah called on the drivers to be watchful of other road users such as; tricycles and motorcycles who flouted driving rules with impunity, which often resulted in fatal accidents.

He commended the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Police Service for their collaborative efforts to minimise road accidents.
