In order to rid the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of waste and to prevent disease transmission in the communities, the Assembly has evacuated heaps of refuse at container sites in selected areas.

The areas include; Ntankoful, Sekondi market, Takoradi market circle, Mpintsin, Fijai, Kojokrom, G.S.T.S., Ahenkofikrom, B.U. Ridge, Essikado East and West and Kweikuma.

Clearing of dump sites was also carried out in areas such as the Takoradi -Cape Coast road, Nkotompo beach, European Town, Ntankoful, ECG/G.S.T.S. road, Akroma Plaza, Mpintsin and Ketan Junction.

The Waste Management Department continued to monitor and supervise the lifting of the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP) containers by Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL).

Mr Anthony K.K. Sam, Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said currently, 32 containers were positioned at vantage areas in the Takoradi Sub-Metro, Sekondi Sub-Metro and Essikado Ketan Sub-Metro.

The MCE explained that four containers which served as floating containers were on the trucks to help facilitate waste collection across the Metropolis.

He also revealed that the Assembly had so far organised two successful general clean-up exercises thereby collecting 915 tons of waste, which was sent to the landfill site.

Mr Sam bemoaned the apathy shown by some members of the public, especially those in the first-class residential areas towards the exercise and therefore prevailed on them to participate in the Sanitation Day Exercise to rid the city of filth.

He also assured that the Assembly would continue to evacuate heaps of refuse gathered around container sites within the Metropolis to ensure that all container sites were kept clean and called on the Assembly to assist in that direction.

According to him, the scheduled maintenance of the liquid waste treatment facility at the landfill site was carried out as planned, thereby enhancing the performance of the seepage treatment facility.

“Sludge removed from the facility for the first time in its operations was used to produce manure, which can be used for both agricultural and horticultural purposes.” he added.

He expressed joy over the performance of the service providers who were able to expand service coverage by registering more clients to the house-to-house waste collection services emphasising that, “the efforts of the service providers have yielded positive results thereby reducing the incidence of indiscriminate dumping of solid waste within the communities.”
