Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources
The Minister for Sanitation Cecilia Dapaah has said that there has been an improvement when it comes to sanitation delivery in the country.
According to her, the improvement is as a result of proper management of solid waste generated in the urban centers.
Speaking to journalists at a press conference Cecilia Dapaah said, “The sanitation services delivery in our cities have witnessed significant improvement in recent times. According to the 2019 report released by the Ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation, 75% of the solid waste generated in the urban centres is now properly managed”.
She announced that as part of the measures to enhance Ghanaians attitude toward good sanitation, her outfit will deploy Sanitation Guards popularly known as Saman-Saman to ensure sanitation bye-laws are maintained.
“Our attitude and behavior, are very important contributing factors in ensuring that our cities and major towns are kept clean at all times. Consequently, the Ministry has decided to facilitate the deployment of Sanitation Guards popularly known as Saman-saman by July this year in the MMDAs to strengthen the enforcement of the sanitation bye-laws to maintain cleanliness in our cities and towns.” She reiterated.
The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has stepped up its monitoring efforts to ensure enhanced service delivery by the MMDAs and members of the Environmental Services Providers Association (ESPA) within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) in particular and across the whole country in general.
Meanwhile, the Minister has advised women not to marry men who have no toilet facilities in their homes.
According to the Minister, house owners must invest in repairing their toilet facilities and not to opt for open defecation when their toilet facilities are damaged.
