Stop attacking police officers – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has condemned attacks on personnel of the Ghana Police Service.

Two cops – Sergeant Michael Gyamasi and Lance Corporal Awal Mohammed – attached to the Kasoa police station were killed by suspected armed robbers on Wednesday during routine checks on the Accra – Winneba highway. Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Mahama said “stringent measures” must be rolled out to “protect our men in uniform.”

“Sad to learn, yet again, of the gruesome killing of two policemen in Kasoa. Our law enforcement officers are doing their best under very challenging circumstances to protect life and property. I, therefore, condemn the increasing spate of violence against them,” Mahama said.

He added: “May their families be consoled and may the perpetrators be brought to justice sooner than later. We must put in place stringent measures to help protect our men in uniform.”

Security analyst Adib Sani has called for stiffer punishment for persons who kill police officers on duty.

“…The death penalty is still in our statutes even though nobody has been killed for the past three decades or so, but, I think the death penalty could be implemented against persons who killed officers because it is becoming one too many,” he stated.

Over the past 30 days, five police officers have been murdered.
