Tearful George Afriyie opens up on relationship with Kwesi Nyantakyi

It’s no secret that the Vice President of Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie has fallen out with his boss, Kwesi Nyantakyi.

The friendly and warm relationship that existed between the two men at the helm of Ghana football has been replaced by an acrimonious one with no sign it of being repaired in the near future.

There have been widespread reports of a fall out between Afriyie and his boss, with an alleged text message from George Afriyie to Nyantakyi being the last straw that broke the camel’s back.

The relationship has broken down to a level that George Afriyie describes what is left of the one envious relationship as a ‘cordial’ one that does not go beyond their work as officials of the Ghana Football Association. The GFA Veep in an interview with Veronica Commey on GTV SportsLite opened up on his failed relationship with the man ‘he was more than ready to do anything for’.

George attributed the fall out to some personalities within the football fraternity who feed Kwesi Nyantakyi with wrong information about him.

“I had a special liking for President Nyantakyi and his style of leadership and I was more than willing to do anything for him. I was more than willing to do anything to protect Nyantakyi and Ghana football. People call me hoping to get something from me so that they give it to Nyantakyi and they always end up disappointed because I’m a loyal person. I can give you series of accusations and I have survived all”.

“They are even colleagues (football administrators) who go to the president and say negative things about me to get favours. Let me tell you this story. Before I became GFA vice president someone sent a text to Nyantakyi which said, ‘If you appoint George Afriyie as your vice, you will die within two years.'”

"The president showed the message to a few people but he never showed it to me. But the good people he showed it to told him I could never hurt a fly”. "Since that incident, every time I go on my knees to pray, I ask God to protect Nyantakyi,” George tearfully revealed”.

Afriyie recently declared his intention to run for office as FA President following an open declaration from Mr Nyantakyi that he would step down come 2019.

Nyantakyi has been in charge of Ghana football since 2005 and was last year appointed the first Vice President of CAF after Ahmad Ahmad succeeded in beating Issah Hayatou in a landmark election.
