The late Mary Agyapong, a Ghanaian nurse who died from Coronavirus, was one of the many essential workers in the UK who contracted the disease while performing their duties and subsequently passed away.
The departed souls were honoured for their bravery and commitment in the fight against the pandemic.
On April 16, 2020, firefighters and hospital staff at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital in Luton, held a minute silence for Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong in her honour.
The Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service posted a video of its Deputy Chief Fire Officer Andrew Hopkinson giving a speech to commemorate Mary Agyapong, who worked at the hospital for five years.
Addressing well-wishers, Andrew Hopkinson said, “We are taking the opportunity to remember and appreciate a wonderful young woman and nurse who’s made a huge contribution to this NHS trust and to the lives of so many patients she has cared for.
“Everyone here will remember her… and we are all grateful for her service.
“It’s also a time to remember all those NHS staff who have died on the frontline fighting this virus.”
Aside eulogizing her hardwork, the 28-year-old was described by her colleagues as “a great example” of what the hospital stands for.
Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong was heavily pregnant and underwent a caesarean section to save her daughter, according to reports.
Her baby, reports say, is doing well.
It, however, is unclear how she contracted the disease since it was reported that she did not attend to coronavirus patients while working
A GoFundMe page for Agyapong’s family and newborn child has raised more than £186, 859 as at May 3, 2020. The campaign creator, Rhoda Asiedu, wrote “it is humane for us to take care of them in every way we can during this heavy and trying time.” She added, “we will forever miss you.” —Melissa Godin
She is survived by her baby girl and her husband only known as AJ.
