Algeria captain, Riyad Mahrez has indicated his thirst to win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament after stressing that it will be the biggest achievement of his career.
The Manchester winger has been sensational for the Desert Foxes since the start of the tournament and scored the winning goal when the North African side locked horns with the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday evening.
A first-half own goal from defender William Troost-Ekong gave Algeria the lead before tournament top goal scorer Odion Ighalo scored from the penalty spot to restore parity for the Nigerians.
The match appeared to be headed for extra-time until Mahrez popped up and struck a sumptuous free-kick into the back of the net to send his side into the grand finale.
Speaking to the media after the match, the two times English Premier League winner revealed that his goal is to lift the AFCON trophy at the end of the tournament because it will be the most important thing in his career.
“It was a difficult game against a difficult opponent but we managed to qualify. We are happy we are making our people happy, we know they are behind us”.
“My goal is to win the title. It’s the most important in my career and we will do our best towards it”, the Algerian talisman said.
