There is a height discrimination when selecting players for youth tournaments. Tall boys are not selected for fear that they will be judged to be overage.
This is the mentality that have gone on for the past decade of selecting players for the youth tournaments.
Since nowadays Black Stars players are selected from youth teams after youth tournaments, what we get is a Black Stars team with average height of about 5ft 5".

There is no record to indicate that all the players who played for the other countries made it to their respective senior national teams. With few exceptions most of of the players who made big splashes at the youth teams from any country dont transition well into their senior teams. Saviola is a typical example.Much as Ghana has had our fair share of failed promising stars, we have also had our fair share of successful players who made from the youth teams- Essien, Appiah, Mutari, Kuffour, Kwadwo Asamoah, Agyeman Badu, Ayew, are from the conveyor belt of the youth teams. Compare this statistically to any nation and we haven't failed.
It is no wonder that the maturity of these players coincinded with the Ghana's qualification to the World cups and outperforming all other African countries.

This is one of the most useless articles i have ever read. Kissi, ask yourself how many people are tall in Ghana? Abedi Pele, Essien, Osei Kofi and Razak are all not tall people. Are you sayin we should go round looking for tall guys even if they don't reach the cut forselection into the national teams? And get your facts right; Christian Sabah is not short and Dan Addo did not win the best player at the 1993 U17 world tournament; Kanu Nwanko did. And what would you say about players like Oscar of Brazil; Hazard of Belgium; Marcello of Brazil and the German captain. If you do not have anything to write about, save your energy for something else.

Dear readers, as much as this article may not be perfect there is still some credit to it. It is an open secret that we age cheat. But we do have some equally taller players who are better, but because they look matured they are overlooked and their shorter counterparts gets the selection to the youth team. The national youth sides is the platform for exposure.
One can play in the premier league for five years without national recognition, but just play in one national youth tournament and one becomes a household name. For most Ghanaians that is all they see of our football and that is all the players they can relate to.
As our stadiums are empty and their is no good sports roundup program to expose talented players to the population ,these youth tournaments will remain the only medium of exposure for youth talents and club administrators will do everything to expose their overage players to that medium.
Unlike our great clubs in Ghana, all European clubs have youth teams from age six. So when we see youth players attached to top European clubs in youth tournaments we have to understand how they reach there. On the other hand youth development in Ghana is not properly planned, it is left to individuals who have to dig deep into their pockets just for the love of the game. Their products from the colts clubs are then transferred to the local divisions where they spend some years before reaching the top flight in Ghana. Then when it comes to national youth call up their ages are reduced and the premier clubs claim all benefits. Our colts, third and second division clubs are doing all the works at the youth level and the premier divisions are reaping the benefits.
I believe that selecting our youth teams from the lower divisions will force the premier sides to start youth teams and that will benefit football in Ghana.
My last point is that the FA has to come out good strategies to promote the national league. They may start by spreading kick of time across the weekend at different times of the day. Stadiums with floodlights should have their games played late and television rights be given to various stations to generate funds. The most important is for the FA and the PLB to work together to find a solution to fill our stadiums. After all foot is suppose to entertain and telecasting games in empty stadiums will kill the entertainment aspect of it.
So my friends, the solutions lies in giving good exposure to the local league and the rest will fall into place.
PS. GFA need to have a better website with information on all football leagues and clubsin Ghana from the colts level. the FA's site is peanuts.

my friend are you sure? I own a second division club in Ghana and I know what goes on.
The coaches are not the real problem. Players are chosen by the age on their cards which is approved and issue by the GFA or its RFA's. There, is where the real problem begins by changing ages according to your stature. It is still going on at a "reasonable" reduction than before.
Winning at the expense of exposing our real age youth to international football is not a good plan for the long term. A player of real 16years age when scouted by European clubs can be added value to and would mature by 20 to 22 years at the highest level and would benefit Ghana in the long run.

Thanks for the insight. Unlike other readers who posted their comments in response to this article, you seem to have read the article open-mindedly. Those who fail to grasp the gist of the article unfortunately constitute the majority of type of people visiting this website. They show the typical mentality most Ghanaian have: that is, prefer not to face the bitter truth. Who is one fooling if one goes to the doctor with a broken left leg and tender the right left for treatment? The article is addressing a serious issue that is drawing Ghana football back: age cheating and how/why it develops, and how it is affecting Ghana football. This rather interesting topic that invites to reflect about a genuine football development in Ghana instead meets fanatics who feel comfortable dwelling in mediocrity and stagnation, and are incapable of thinking problem solving.

Oh Lord have mercy, Ghanaweb should not have allowed you to post this article. Very insensitive and unwise. You don't have to be 7ft tall to play football. How tall is Messi, Aguerro, Mata,Neymar and Hazzard,. Look at the whole Spanish team. Consider the Argentines as well. Please don't confuse anyone with your uninformed article. I suggest you get all your facts before posting any article. By the way, shortness in height does not equal stunted growth or malnutrition. Again, midget is too strong a word to use in this context. While I admit that you've made yourself look very stupid by posting such an uninformed article, you can still make amends by getting all your facts before posting another article. Stay blessed.

Fool. Ghanaians are by nature short either through malnourishment or genetics or probably a unique combination of both. I have seen the stock of food items in several countries and I must say, our food markets are not well stocked. Our vegetable supply and intake is limited, animal and plant protein is very expensive. A casual visit to our coastal markets will show you the high cost of fish. Fish along the Volta lake is high priced. There is very little variety in the supply of vegetables- okra, tomato, egg plant, onion, pepper and a very few others. Try adding carrots and mushroom and your soup budget will be too large to manage. In our society, a handful of peanut a day for the growing child is an unaffordable luxury. So your contention/implication that mature yet stunted players are selected to hide their real age id ridiculously stupid. Remember, not all players who excel in youth tournaments progress and excel in the senior team and many have been sidelined in the youth tournaments only to excel in the senior teams. Get a life, Sir whatever your name is. Actually stop spewing forth nonsense.

In the first place, I totally disagree with you about your "stunted growth" thing. The average Ghanaian of 20 yrs and below is about that height so "wetin you dey talk". What's your age and how tall are you, my brother? You see, your article would have been very constructive had you not incorporated this "stunted growth theory" you coined.
