In any market, confidence does have a significant effect on the price of commodities and this applies to the currency market as well. This is a clear indication that both the international and local markets have little or no confidence in the Ghanaian market and economy.
There is however the structural problem of exporting too little and importing to much.
What is the immediate cause of the sudden increase in the rate of decline? Has it got any links to the huge budget deficit we incurred in the last quarter of 2013? The election expenditure was so high even legon girls were getting cars.Since we don't manufacture cars and all the other commodities which were imported to purchase the election,it goes without saying the demand for foreign currency would have increased beyond what our economy could sustain.

Absolute nonsense, the cedi has depreciated 120% since you fools came to power, so don't even go there. We are reaping the excessive over spending you guys did to buy the 2012 elections.
When we say you have mismanaged the economy we mean your crass incompetence, corruption and crony capitalism. So far all your measures do nothing to right the fundamental economic structure of Ghana, we still produce and export raw materials, adding no value to them, and turn around to import things we could easily produce at home such as rice, textiles, fish, tomatoes and even toothpicks.
All that this government has been doing is half-hearted administrative moves that do nothing to change the fundamental structure of the economy. We are not tackling the supply side of the economy, only the demand side by trying to institute price controls a la the currency market. What will happen is business people will refuse to bring their dollars to the bank, it is going to go to the black market again. Fools in NDC never learn. What happened to the single-digit inflation mantra you touted for so long towards the 2012 elections, when as yet inerest rates were still very high? Have you seen yourlies have now caught up with you. You have not seen anything yet, the Arab spring is about to hit Ghana big time. Monkeys in government, we shall see. You will run away very soon.

The dollar was in free fall during the US recession in 2008; things were very bad in the US. It took the hard work of Obama to save the dollar. Why is LAZY MAHAMA not working hard to save the cedi ?

There is a hell lots of difference between the industrialized north versus the underdeveloped south. Obama is in the north and Mahama and Kufuor are in the underdeveloped south.

The fall of the Cedi is not a recent phenomenon. It happened decades ago, with the coming of globalization. It has affected the south differently from how it has affected the industrialized north. With each passing decade, it gets worse. Please ignore all the unfortunate and ridiculous theories and let's search for a more meaningful structural response to this global economic crisis.

" ...when those in charge of economic affairs are interested in dwarfs." Change their thinking or vote them out.
It is a shame that many people in our country don't understand the implications of globalization.

They are more then idiots those running our economy they have no clue to what they are doing. I blame those who voted for the corrupt NDC party, those foot soliders and the party members calling for food can go and eat Gari as one NDC minister said whiles the MPs enjoy life. Next your head and vote for a government who would be there for the masses.

It's sometimes hard to believe such Government Ministers and NDC party officials have functioning brains!
It's the cost of keeping people like these in Government that's why the cedi is in a free fall!

Btw, I wonder you also got wrong the name De-Souza, writing it Desoso. The De-Souza name, once upon a time, was infamous in W. Africa. I think this woman is just living up to the family name, just as young Adoboli, lived up to his, with a different form of raiding.:-)
