Excellent Piece Arthur K. Keep it up. You have summed it up very well. Many of our so-called opinion leaders are at their best when they ape the mistakes of the West.As you rightly pointed out the reent obsession with gay issues in the presence is one such example.Ghanaian leaders today need to LISTEN to what their own people are saying. WHAT ARE THE MAIN PREOCCUPATIONS OF THE AVERAGE GHANAIAN TODAY? THEY ARE CERTAINLY NOT OBSESSING ABOUT GAYS AND GAY RIGHTS. YES "WEE" MAY BE A GROWING PROBLEM IN GHANA BUT IS IT REALLY THE "NUMBER ONE PROBLEM" ON THE MINDS OF MOST GHANAIANS? I THINK NOT

I do agree that Afica should make up its own mind uninfluenced from the west, but you are very wrong about cannabis.
Cannabis can empower the poor, it gives them a cheap source of vital medicine and nutrition, building materials, fuel, cooking oil and much much more. Everyone can grow it and therefore it cannot be controlled by big business or government.
In short it could help save Africa, but in doing so obliterate the profits of so many businesses and governments.
I hope, sir, that you are are more interested in the well being of your fellow man than you are in personal gain because when you check the facts, anyone who opposes cannabis should be treated with a healthy dose of scepticism regarding their true motives.

In this article, Dr. Arthur Kennedy does not offer any compelling reason for the criminalization of marijuana, or any drug for that matter. That drug is not different from any other , insofar as it has its positive and negative sides. Thus it does not make sense to fill our prisons with people whose only crime is that they decided to go high
and have some fun, while real criminals walk about in broad daylight. There is nothing to show for a century of fight against any drug, and there is no evidence that decriminalization will lead to increased use of drugs. The stupid notion of alcohol prohibition should have taught us a lesson not to try to stop anybody from doing any drugs. Anybody that decides to do drug will find a way to do it, and it is costly to him and the whole society if the drug is illegal. Legalization, taxation and regulation are the ways to approach the issue and make it a win-win for everybody.
The most stupid policy in this world is this so-called war on drugs. It is dangerously expensive, wasteful, destructive, distractive and unwinnable. It is just making the drug barons super-rich by hiking the drug prices while impoverishing everybody else!

Africa doesn't need these:
Legalization of MARIJUANA,GAY RIGHTS/HOMOSEXUALITY,CHILD PORNOGRAPHY etc.
The fact that Ghana has not been able to control MARIJUANA USAGE & TRAFFICKING,doesn't mean we should legalize it.
That is a very good point, the writer made.
If Akrasi Sarpong has failed Ghana,we should rather kick him out of his post.
WE DON'T NEED SUCH BULLSHIT IN OUR SOCIETY,THAT IS ALREADY FILLED WITH BRIBERY & CORRUPTION,PROSTITUTION,HOMOXEXUALITY and array of social vices.
It's about time we differentiated the right from the wrong, the weighty from the trivial and the strategic from the tactical:
THE SHEEP FROM THE GOATS.
The Ghana I knew, from time immemorial, was devoid of such bad social vices, and has to be purged but not entertained, nurtured, fertilized, out of it.
Women smokers were tagged as prostitutes, but not today.
ISN'T THAT ALONE SAD AND SCARY?

Well said Mr. Kobina Kennedy, I am on you side but people who are for the motion to legalize marijuana will also have something to say and when their saying it, I pray they avoid insult and respect our views much as we will respect theirs. That is democracy, lets disagree and agree. Divided we fall, together we stand. Mr. Kennedy, you have said it all and what I will like to add is, do Mr, Akrasi Sarpong have the right statistics on marijuana users? If few people are using it doesn't mean we should legalize it. Legalizing it doesn't mean only "generating revenue" for the country. It also means exposing and making the psycho-medicine available for every one use. And its effect we all know, will become uncontrollable. We can't afford to emulate America on this issue. America have a system that checks and control this psycho-medicine so that only those who needs them for medical purposes gets it, and even that, there are few bad ones who are still able to beat the system. Lets compare Ghana, are we capable of checking and controlling marijuana should we legalize it? Do Ghana have records of people who grow marijuana and those who will becoming in to this business to pay tax to the government should marijuana be legalized? We are only going to invites another "galamsey" that will make the government run after illegal marijuana farmers. The whole thing will become backyard garden that people will grow marijuana at their backyard and be selling to the customers because this is a venture that have the market on the street. There will therefore be no revenue generation from this. Rather puts pressure on our inadequate psychiatric hospitals, accident and emergency wards. Please lets us safe the future of our children, for they are the nation of tomorrow, according to Torgbui Sri of the Anlo's. God Bless Ghana.
